Reflect on Your Habits

“Nature is ever at work building and pulling down, creating and destroying, keeping everything whirling and flowing, allowing no rest but in rhythmical motion, chasing everything in endless song out of one beautiful form into another.” - John Muir

The end of the year seems to bring with it a different kind of hustle. We too are wrapping up a year of goals and milestones both achieved and not yet realized, alongside many lessons learned. After a year of building and pulling down, creating and clearing, we now have an opportunity to reflect on the habits that have propelled us forward and those that no longer serve the “rhythmical motion” of our lives.

Being intentional about what we take with us into the new year can be the difference between feeling taken in by the whirlwind of a new start or being the conductor of it!

What makes the difference? Our habits!

As we gear up for the new year, we rely on the habits of planning and prioritizing as the winning combo for making progress!

Think of planning as laying out the roadmap and designing the grand vision —setting goals, outlining strategies and envisioning success. Prioritizing is the art of determining the order of importance of the tasks and steps that contribute to the grand vision, ensuring that each brick is laid in the proper sequence for a solid foundation.

Planning habit to consider: Daily REP (best done at the end of each day)

  1. Reflect (R): Take a moment to reflect on the day—acknowledge achievements, identify what worked well and recognize obstacles.

  2. Express (E): Jot down 1-3 things for which you are grateful. A positive mindset sets the tone for productivity.

  3. Prep (P): Review your calendar, prioritize tasks and plan for the next day. Carry over any unfinished tasks.

Prioritizing habit to consider: Proactively manage time and expectations

  1. Block Time: Allocate dedicated time for important tasks, grouping similar items together for maximum efficiency.

  2. Take Breaks: Incorporate a 60-minute break into the day, buffer meetings and make room for whitespace to recharge.

  3. Set Boundaries: Clearly define and communicate office hours and eliminate distractions to maintain focus and productivity.
